Will Versus Score A Hit With Soup-Styled Sports Show?

By Ryan Corazza

One area sports blogs have succeeded is in their media criticism — especially that of monolith ESPN. I’m certainly not as bombast about ESPN anchors as many of my fellow brethren are, but when there’s a top dog running amok, it’s good to keep them in line here and there. It’s also of worth to make fun of them. This is what “The Daily Show” does so brilliantly for political coverage by the major networks; This is what “The Soup” does rather well for all the nonsense that is entertainment and gossip news.

But partly because ESPN runs such game on TV sports coverage (and partly because I think it’s hard to do sports funny on TV), this sort of pick-on-the-big guys for their lameness/stupidity sort of show is nowhere to be found. Versus is trying to change that.

“Sports Soup,” which bows 10 p.m. Oct. 14, will be shot in L.A. and produced by the team behind “The Soup.” Comedian Matt Iseman has been tapped to host.

The half-hour “Sports Soup” will air twice a week on Versus, Tuesday and Thursday nights, and promises an irreverent look at the sports world.

” ‘Sports Soup’ will offer viewers an undistorted glimpse into sports,” said Marc Fein, exec VP of programming production and business operations at Versus. “It’s our way of providing a voice to sports fans as the show will say what we are all thinking but no one is actually saying.”

Awful Annoucing has word that the show will be called “After Further Review.” (UPDATE: Versus e-mailed me and provided the above logo. “Sports Soup” it is.) And like Dan Shanoff, I do like this idea, but like he says, it must be done right. If it doesn’t subscribe to the sensibilities of its target audience (or is lame/not funny/poorly written), it’s probably going to have a short shelf life.

As an avid viewer of E!'s "The Soup" I think that it is a great ideat to try to adapt the concept to sports. I agree that it needs to have good writing (and a little bit of good fortune in topical sporting news) from the get-go to really be something that works.. Frankly, if they bash ESPN and their biased opinions and pointless stories on issues, I definitely see myself tuning in.

I mean think about this, we could have Marriotti being ripped on that show like Tyra is ripped on "The Soup" and for that I can hope this gets off the ground.
