Eddie Vedder Gives You Yet Another Sappy, Easily Mocked Cubs Song
Waiting … watching the clock it’s 10 o’clock it’s time to blooo-ugh/ Tell me …
Oh, hey. Sorry about that. I was just humming the only Pearl Jam song I could think of as I started typing. But guess what — there’s a new addition to the canon. Eddie Vedder wrote a song about the Cubs. No kidding. I bet if you’re in your mid-30’s, white, and a Cubs fan, this is the greatest day of your life.
Some lyrics:
We are one with the Cubs, with the Cubs we’re in love.
Hold our heads tall as the underdogs.
We are not fairweather, but farweather fans.
Like brothers in arms, in the suites and the stands.
There’s magic in the Ivy and the old score board.
The same one I stared at as a kid keeping score.
In a world full of greed, we could never want more.
Someday we’ll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we’ll go all the way.
Apparently, the song is performed as an “Irish folk song with a singalong chorus,” which, lyrics aside, actually sounds pretty awesome. Nothing disguises mediocrity quite like an Irish guitar jangle and an organ backdrop. Also: alcohol. Lots of alcohol helps.
No word on whether this song will replace “Go Cubs Go” at Wrigley Field, but if there is a Kurt Cobain in heaven, may He make it so.
Important Update: Eamonn has now listened to the song and enjoys it.
