White Sox’s Season Collapses Under Weight Of Metrodome
People were calling the Sox chokers yesterday. This was wrong. If one knows anything about this team, it’s that they are extraordinarily awful indoors. It’s that the Twins have owned them this season in the Metrodome. They were simply playing as expected.
But after last night, the label now so aptly fits. Losing two out of three is fine and expected, but getting swept when the Twins gifted you runs in the fourth inning on the hands of three errors, ones that led to a five-run lead, is an epic fail.
Sure, one can nitpick. Why was Ken Griffey Jr. out in center in any of these games. Last night early on, he couldn’t wrangle in a ball hit over his head, one I’m sure Brian Anderson would have gotten to. It led to a score for the Twins. And there was also a ball sneaked in down the third base line by the Twins that was so clearly foul, that was called fair and led to a run.
But at this point, there’s no reason for it. It feels almost as if the Sox could have mounted a 30-run lead and the pesky Twins would have found a way to win. This is what they do, this is what they’ve done.
And sure: this season is not over. The Sox are only a half game back. But a scenario in which they win the AL Central seems rather difficult. They absolutely must win two of three this weekend against the Indians. The Twins, one could safely assume, will take two of three from Kansas City.
Then the Sox would have to win the makeup game against the Tigers and then win the one-game playoff against the Twins on Tuesday. Not bloody likely.
What an awful, crushing feeling it is to have your fate ripped from your hands. What a terrible, pathetic display of baseball when it mattered most.
Its going to be a long, cold lonely winter.
