From the Box: Angry, Frustrated Ozzie
A veteran of the Chicago beat reporting scene, David Schuster regularly writes about the sights and sounds of Chicago sports from the press box and locker room for MOUTHPIECE Blog.
As of this writing, amazing as it is, the White Sox are still in control of their own destiny. In spite of a grotesque performance Friday night against Cleveland and three horrendous losses in Minnesota, the Sox can still win their division.
First the math. All the Sox have to do (no matter what happens with the Twins) is win their final two games vs. Cleveland and win Monday’s makeup contest vs. Detroit. At that point, if they are still tied with Minnesota, the Twins will come to Chicago on Tuesday to play one game for all the marbles.
But if you were in attendance Friday night, you would find it almost comical to believe this is a playoff caliber team. Ozzie Guillen made numerous trips to the mound (seven in five innings) and finally told Octavio Dotel, “Please don’t have me come out here any more because I don’t want to be booed any further.”
That was Guillen’s funny side coming out.
But prior to that, and being sick of all the carnage, Ozzie went all Tasmanian Devil on the clubhouse. He completely tore apart his office, pulling pictures off the wall and sweeping everything off his desk. He later calmed down and told the media his team doesn’t deserve to be in the postseason. Guillen also said he’s embarrassed by how they’re playing.
It was vintage Guillen. Refreshingly honest and right to the point. The players, though frustrated, are taking the whole situation in stride. But as always, Guillen continues to be both the conscious of this team and the leader in emotion.
