Lou Piniella Is Going Nowhere; Cubs Pick Up His Option Through 2010
Lou Piniella has a reputation as an unpredictable sort, the manager with a legendary temper who agreed, somehow, to manage the then-hapless Tampa Bay then-Devil Rays for a few years.
But since arriving in Chicago last year, Lou has actually been sort of predictable. Conventional. Unafraid to rely not only on his deep bank of baseball wisdom, but on the occasional new thing — pushing for high OBP people and yielding the Cubs one of the franchise’s most successful offenses. And those legendary blowups? Largely, though not entirely, a thing of the past.
So, good news for Cubs fans, or at least anyone who purchased a Piniella jersey in recent months: Lou is staying on until 2010.
Many speculated that this would be Lou’s final year, especially if the Cubs fulfilled the promise of their rollicking regular season. Now that speculation will switch until 2010. In any case, it’s reassuring — should the Cubs (cough) not (cough) make the whole World Series thing happen this year, continuity will win the day.
