The Cubs Broke A Water Pipe At Dodger Stadium And No One Is Fessing Up
Lost in the shuffle in the aftermath that is the Cubs 2008 season — Completely Unstoppable Before September? — was the fact that sometime shortly after the Dodgers dropped the Cubs out in L.A., someone attached to the Cubbies broke a metal water pipe at the back of the visitor’s dugout. (Anger!!11!)
As Rick Telander points out today, it was quietly swept under the rug because the game ended after midnight Chicago time and reporters were rerouted into the Cubs dugout via another entrance because of a “plumbing problem.” But as the dust settles, Telander has done some sleuthing to get to the bottom of this sordid affair.
But apparently general manager Jim Hendry did tell a Dodgers official before the team bus left, ”Find out how much it cost, and we’ll pay for it.”

I called the Dodgers, and no one there (almost everyone’s in Philly, remember) wanted to go on the record. But I will use these unattributed, yet real quotes: ”One of the main water pipes that connects to the locker room was broken after the conclusion of the game. It is metal. There was obvious damage. It didn’t just happen on its own. The problem was addressed immediately.”

If someone would step forward and fess up to the off-field thing, that would be nice.
Doubtful the culprit is ever going to come forward here. And really, not that big a deal, right? In any event, I’m just hoping whoever did it later flew down to Sammy Sosa’s house and smashed the crap out of his boombox.
