MLS Expansion Cities: Who Ya Got?

By Ryan Corazza

Apparently, even through all this, MLS is still hopeful it can pull off a few expansion teams, and are set to name some of these franchises in March of next year. Today is the deadline for applications. So far, a few cities have thrown in an official bid, and a couple others have been targeted as expected applicants. What follows are some pros and cons of these fine and fair cities.

St. Louis

Pro: The sport seems to have a pretty good following in St. Louis, and fans could enjoy Budweiser at games. If they named the team the Cardinals, these fans probably wouldn’t even notice the difference.

Con: Opposing teams may think the arch is a goal.

Ottawa

Pro: It’s said Queen Victoria randomly picked Ottawa as Canada’s capital, so yeah, this city has a history of being picked for something for no particular reason.

Con: The Ottawa Swans would totally run a wussy soccer team out of town.

Montreal

Pro: Last year, Forbes ranked it as one of the top 10 cleanest cities in the world, making it the ideal city for soccer riots. It’s a sister city with Lyon in France, and they have a soccer club. (Global synergy!)

Con: Baseball didn’t do so hot there.

Vancouver

Pro: Vancouver is most often ranked as one of the three most livable cities in the world, so even though no one will be attending games, players can enjoy their quality of life. It is hosting the 2010 Olympics and they have an odd flag.

Con: It’s Canada.

Atlanta

Pro: I’m hearing that if Atlanta gets a team, there’s a provision for Michael Vick to come play center midfield. (My sources are my own deranged mind.)

Con: No one has heard of this sport in Georgia.

Miami

Pro: South Beach, bro. Also, “Miami Vice.” Also, Diddy and Sammy Sosa hang out there.

Con: Diddy and Sammy Sosa hang out there.

New York-Area

Pro: Large fanbase to draw from. You can still call the team the New York Something Or Others, even if they play in New Jersey.

Con: The Red Bulls will get angry, and this will eventually lead to America’s Second Civil War, which will lead to the end of the Earth. THIS CAN’T HAPPEN FOR THE WORLD’S FATE IS DEPENDANT UPON IT.
