Chicago Cubs May Help Open Up New Yankee Stadium
You know what’s better than having one gaudy, nationally-followed yet nationally-loathed baseball team open up a new stadium in the Bronx? Having two gaudy, nationally-followed yet nationally-loathed baseball baseball teams open up a new stadium in the Bronx. (Two great tastes that taste great together … depending on your prospective!)
You see, it appears the Cubs may play the exhibition opener in new Yankee Stadium.
Piniella indeed may be returning to the Bronx, as the Associated Press is reporting the Cubs and Yankees are in negotiations for either one or two exhibition games at the $1.6 billion ballpark in April.
The Cubs recently have ended their exhibition season in Las Vegas with two games at Cashman Field on the Friday and Saturday before the regular-season opener. But the opportunity to open up new Yankee Stadium would be a far more lucrative venture than playing in Vegas, and the honor of being the Yankees’ first choice would be a bonus for the organization.
Admittedly, this is pretty cool. And the Yanks are smart here: sure, they could play the Red Sox, but that would add the whole nasty rivalry element to it. Playing the sweet, little never-win Cubbies makes it more about the stadium and makes everything happy and lovely.
Good on ya, New York.
