From The Box: Ben Gordon’s Dilemma
A veteran of the Chicago beat reporting scene, David Schuster regularly writes about the sights and sounds of Chicago sports from the press box and locker room for MOUTHPIECE Blog.
With Larry Hughes out indefinitely with his dislocated shoulder, it’s imperative Ben Gordon gets back into the mix. Gordon has played only one game so far in the exhibition season and barely has seen the practice floor. He continues to say his big toe is hindering him and the coaching staff and higher ups are getting increasingly frustrated.
While saying publically they can’t question how injured he is, privately the Bulls brass is wondering if Gordon is using the injury as a statement for not getting his desired contract. Gordon has been unusually quiet around his teammates which goes against his character.
He is also known to be one of the all-time gym rats, yet barely has seen the floor of late. The fact that he is not doing what he loves most adds to the frustrations and suspicions of the team.
Gordon turned down a six-year deal worth an estimated $58 million in the offseason and confided that he didn’t think he was treated with respect. A one-year qualifying offer was finally inked, which paves the way for him to become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end. The only problem is this: for Gordon to get a better offer from another team, he has to prove himself on the court. But, you can’t prove anything from the sidelines or on the bench.
This situation has become a two-headed monster. Ben Gordon needs to play, both for himself and for his team.
