Philadelphia Is Already The New Boston, And They Haven’t Even Won Anything Yet

By Will Brinson

I have covered the absurdness of Philadelphia Phillies fans getting all amped up about World Series parade plans elsewhere already, and while it certainly merits mentioning, I would like to briefly touch on the fact that these people are on the quick path to becoming totally insufferable.

(Aside: Yes, the No. 3 and No. 5 most Googled phrases in the entire world today are “Phillies Parade” and “Phillies World Series Parade.” Yes, it is completely ridiculous that anyone is planning a celebration with only a 3-1 lead. The Yankees didn’t even do this with the Red Sox in 2004.)

Then I look at result No. 8: Citizens Bank Park Seating Chart. And what that says to me is that a lot of people in the general Philadelphia area are interested in purchasing tickets for a World Series clinching game. And why shouldn’t they be — it’s a historical moment. However, I also know that the majority of people who care about their local team and support said local team, don’t need a seating chart to know where to sit in order to have a good view.

Which leads me to the worst point of all: Philadelphia is about to become the “New Boston.” Sure, they don’t have the success in football or basketball (yet), but there’s a legitimate chance the Sixers could backdoor the East this year, and the Eagles look fantastic. But success does not a classification make, my friends.

No, indeed, it is the hubris and obnoxious swagger of a fanbase that drives this stereotype. You can believe, as sure as there are bright pink Red Sox hats, that should the Phils manage to close out this World Series, a drove of new “Phans” will come out of the woodwork to cheer the city of Brotherly Love on in future baseball seasons.

And, just like Bostonians, this is not meant to take away from the legions of current fans, who are very much obsessed and behave in a very rational (or is it irrational?) manner towards their fanhood. But once Philly stops becoming a loser and takes a title in any major sport, the bandwagon will be rolling, the fans will be miserable and there will be nothing we can do about it. At least, on the bright side, Boston sucks again. So there’s that.
