Charlie Weis Is Telling Recruits He’ll Be Back, Because Saying Otherwise Would Be Sort Of Silly

By Ryan Corazza

Following the Charlie Weis saga in the immediate future is going to be fun, because if they let him go, recruits are going to quickly scurry — oh, how they’ll long for his Super Bowl rings — and transfers are going to run rampant, and they’ll be in an even deeper hole. Cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame.

Howeva, if Weis does stay, things may keep in line with how he’s done as of late, and the hole will stay about the same — somewhere just below the surface. As Bart Simpson once said: “You’re damned if you do, you’re damned if you don’t.”

There aren’t many programs I actively root against, but Notre Dame football is one of them. So like I said: This should be fun. (Also, Notre Dame football this decade sort of reminds me of another storied program in the state of Indiana that’s trying to get it right.)

Anyways, if Shaquelle O’Neal Evans is to be believed, Charlie Weis seems pretty confident he’ll be back next year (via the Trib).

“I asked him about his job status,” Evans told the web site after Weis visited him Sunday. “He told me he’s good to go; he’ll be there. He said he made sure he’s good before he left and it’s just the media spreading that he’s going to get fired. He said if he didn’t know if he was going to be there or not he would tell me. It makes me feel good that he’ll be there.”

As Brian Hamilton at the Trib rightly points out, there are a few holes in this. Namely, Weis is set to meet with Notre Dame’s AD next week to “review the season.” Another Rivals.com report is claiming assistant coaches are telling recruits Weis “plans to be head coach.”

Also, who the hell would ever tell a recruit he was going to get fired?

But yeah, um, he’ll be back.
