Orton Returns To Form; Bears’ Beat Goes On
There were two particular passes Kyle Orton threw in the Bears 23-10 win against the Jags yesterday that caught my eye. These two passes were so incredibly perfect, so precise, that one could tell Orton’s ankle, though not 100 percent, is good enough to start throwing with some oomph again.
The first was his touchdown pass to Greg Olsen. It was a strike, perfectly threading the defenders covering Olsen while Olsen’s outstretched arm reached across the goal line for the score.
The other was a go route to Devin Hester — who went for 80 yards on five catches — in the second half. If a physicist had charted out the exact trajectory of the loft and distance for Orton to place that in Hester’s hands in stride, it would have been exactly what Orton executed.
So, the Bears won. And the defense looked pretty good too, as they amassed three sacks. But the Jags have a depleted offensive line, and um, sort of a depleted team. (Danieal Manning’s early pick set the tone.) No matter what my friend told me about how good David Gerrard was going to be and how I should definitely draft him in my fantasy football league, Maurice Jones-Drew is about the only bright spot on a team that’s now 4-9.
The Vikings won yesterday too. If they go 1-2 from here on out, the Bears will need to win out. That’s a lot to ask. After a short week of practice here, the Bears take on the Saints on Thursday night at Soldier Field.
Let’s hope Orton’s ankle can hold up for another week under such short rest.
