Your New Sundance Darling: Mike Tyson
This video, in which Mike Tyson says somewhat of a dirty word (see: NSFW) about a woman’s body part, is making the rounds on the Web today. It’s from his speech at a dinner party out at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, in which the man was being celebrated and honored for Tyson, a documentary by James Toback exploring Tyson’s life, in which the modern-day man himself does a lot of talking to the camera.
It’s the typical look-what-he-said-this-time Tyson shock value bit, one that bloggers like to run with, insomuch as it’s a sports figure saying something at least halfway interesting. But since I’ve been down that road before, and a documentary on a figure such as Tyson, a man known for insanity, drug abuse and fits of rage, but also for complete and total domination of a sport, is incredibly interesting to me, I peeked around for information on it.
I didn’t locate a fully-doctored trailer of the film online, so this is about the best I can do for now:
The returns since its premiere? Fantastic. The crowd gave it a standing ovation. Defamer calls Mike a “Sundance darling,” Bloomburg is all positives, as is Comingsoon.net. When it was at Cannes back in the spring, Variety was all smiles as well.
And, by all accounts, Mike seems to be soaking this all in. In the Q&A after the film played at Sundance, he was humbled by the outpouring of accolades, but worried this born-again success might go to his head and cause those dreaded problems again.
And that bring us back to that YouTube video that’s been making the rounds today. Here’s the quote people are parsing out of it:
“I’m afraid of how much p—y, and how much money I’m going to get, and it’s going to lead to a lot of problems. That really bothers me a lot.”
People laugh during that top quote
“It sounds funny, but it’s really detrimental to me.”
If you were there a few nights ago when Tyson said this, that quote in and of itself is actually kind of funny. In a room full of sharp-dressed men, here’s Tyson cussing as he’s thanking them all. But, he’s also being incredibly honest: Now that everyone has fallen back in love with him, with his story and his life, now that people are paying attention to him again with the accolades this movie is getting, all it takes is some woman, or some money, or whatever other trouble Tyson can get into, and it can come crashing down again rather quickly. He could relapse. As the New York Times points out, the spectacle Mike is creating is good as far as trying to get the film bought and distributed. But is it good for his well-being?
That remains to be seen. But if the former champ falls down once more, we might just be too tired to pick him up again.
