NBC Adds Everyone In The World To Super Bowl Broadcast Show

By Eamonn Brennan

When I was a kid, there were two ways to get on television: “Cops” and “America’s Funniest Home Videos.” Oh, and “Real World,” I guess. I was like six when that show started. But that was it! If you couldn’t cut it on those three programs, you were forever doomed to live on the opposite side of the glass. It was a simpler time.

No more. Now, everyone can be on TV. I’m not even referring to the glut of reality shows that keeps hitting new, lower depths (ahem, “Bromance”). I’m talking about NBC’s Super Bowl production show. NBC has already overstuffed its Sunday night show with talent; now, they’ve basically invited everyone that ever lived to come be on camera:

Tony Dungy and Mike Holmgren, who as NFL head coaches combined to win two Super Bowl rings and reach four Super Bowls, will join NBC’s pregame coverage of Super Bowl XLIII, which begins at 12 noon, ET on Sunday, Feb. 1. “Over the past few years I’ve enjoyed getting to know Tony and Mike through numerous production meetings and have been impressed by the way they handled themselves not only as coaches and communicators but also as men,” said Ebersol.

Excellent quote, Ebersol. I’m glad you look into the souls of the men you hire to be your on-camera talent for a week. I guess that explains Matt Millen.

There are two ways this show could go:

1) Everyone will be stepping on each other’s toes, which is what already happens every Sunday night — Jerome Bettis wants to make a point and Bob Costas wants to say something and Peter King talked to someone who told him something inconsequential and Keith Olbermann looks like he wants to blow his brains out.

2) The stage gets so crowded NBC forgets their purpose, and Greg Gillis shows up with his laptop for an impromptu Girl Talk show. Rad! Cris Collinsworth loves the one where he syncs up Metallica and “My Lip Gloss be Poppin’.”
