Jay Cutler to the Bears: Differing Opinions Prevail
Jay Cutler is, more or less, on the trading block at this point and time. While the Broncos have stated that they don’t want to trade him and that he is the quarterback of the future, Cutler’s refusal to meet with the team puts them in a pretty tricky situation.
Some “insiders” (read: Trent Dilfer) think that the Broncos and Cutler will emerge from this more unified and ready to destroy the AFC West. I’m not so sure. In fact, I’m almost confident that they’ll end up moving him at this point, if only because he and Josh McDaniels aren’t getting along.
So, that being said, where does he go? Well, right now there are, allegedly, four teams in the market for Cutler’s services: the Lions, the Vikings, the Browns and yoooooooooouuuur Chicago Bears.
There’s no question as to Chicago’s possible interest, but the debate is raging as to whether or not he would be a good fit. Vaughn McLure at the Sun-Times emphatically says he will not, based primarily on the notion that the Bears are supporting Orton. Which, frankly, isn’t really a good enough argument, particularly when Chicago declined to give him any sort of extension.
Bob LeGere of the Daily Herald falls closer to my own opinion, stating that making a move for Cutler would indeed assist the Bears in reclaiming the NFC North. Why? Well, for starters, he does in fact have a cannon of an arm, even if he’s not completely polished at this point. That cannon would be a decent weapon to pair with Devin Hester, the lightning fast return man that Lovie Smith seems intent on misusing.
Add in someone like Joey Galloway or, as LeGere mentions, Laveranues Coles, and suddenly, the Bears have a pretty potent offense. Perhaps that’s not their standard formula. And perhaps this is just another fleeting rumor in the churn of Cutler discussion. But it makes a lot more sense than most people are willing to admit, and if McRoberts needs to get Cutler out of Denver — and it appears that he does — Chicago would be a lot better off making a play than not.
