Believe It: Carlos Zambrano Is Fan Of White Sox
At a certain level, the Cubs-White Sox rivalry doesn’t shine quite as bright. For the fans, it exists. It’s ever present. For Ozzie Guillen and Ken Williams, the two at the head of the White Sox who like to play into the Sox’s second team in the city sob story, it exists.
But, for the players, it’s not quite as intense. Sure, they understand it at a fan level. They recognize why it exists. They want to beat the other team in town when they play each year. But, most of these dudes didn’t grow up with it. They are imported from elsewhere. They don’t have deep, emotional familial ties to either team.
As such, it’s not as crazy for them. That’s probably a good thing. But even still, it’s unlikely a player from the Sox is going to profess his love for the Cubs, or vice versa. That’s just not how it works. So, I was surprised when Carlos Zambrano was quoted in the Sun-Times this morning saying this:
”I grew up as a White Sox fan. That was my favorite team,” Zambrano said. ”I apologize to the Cubs fans for saying this, but you don’t have control when you are 6, 7 years old of your feelings. Your feelings are with the team you see as a child. For me, it was the White Sox.”
[ ... ]
”I love the Cubs,” Zambrano said. ”Now, I like the Cubs more than the White Sox. Well, just a little bit of a feeling for the White Sox — maybe 2 percent. But 98 percent of my feeling is for the Cubs.”
Seeing as Zambrano inked a high-figure, five-year contract with the Cubs last season, he isn’t coming to the South Side anytime soon. But, I’m sure when he’s older and his skills have diminished, maybe his buddy Ozzie Guillen can convince him to come play for an incentive-laden deal.
Can’t be worse that Bartolo Colon, right?
