MLB Cracks Down On Awful Pants-Over-Cleats Look

When it comes to new baseball ideologies, I tend to side with the blogging generation. I prefer Baseball Prospectus to Bill Plaschke. I love the White Sox, but if Ozzie Guillen talks about small ball one more time in one of the best hitter’s parks in baseball, I may wonder if it really is just a marketing gimmick.

But there is one new-school philosophy that I absolutely cannot stand, and it is this: the pants-over-cleats/pants-all-the-way down look, which players have really taken to the past few years:

Now, I would like to say that the newer, more innovative basketball jerseys that Ohio State and Syracuse rock are right up my alley. So, this isn’t some assault on any change to a basic jersey.

But, this has not been a change for the better. You can’t tell me you prefer that atrocious fashion look to the the classic pants-up-show-me-some-sock style lived on today by the likes of Eric Byrnes, can you? (OK, fine. You can. I just won’t agree with you.)

Anyway, it appears MLB is on my side here, because they are priming to fine players who decide to sport the newer look this year.

Major League Baseball is cracking down on players who pull the legs of their pants too far over their cleats — with a close eye on Twins outfielder Denard Span.

Span has been warned that he will be fined $1,000 by the league after he was caught with his pants over his shoes during a series in Baltimore last season.

In fact, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire had to read a letter to the players on Thursday about the crackdown — a letter that included a photo of Span in a take-out slide with the bottom of his pants looped over the back of his spikes.

Span claims he was a victim of circumstance last year in that series; a hole in his pants accidentally looped under his spikes. And it seems the pants in the photo I’ve displayed in this post might be OK; it’s just dudes that are getting too careless and covering a majority of their cleats that seem to be the problem here. Although, Luis Castillo (thx, twins fan) Alexi Casilla, as you can see, is certainly pushing the envelope in that regard.

But whatever, my point still stands. Give me some sock, or give me death.

This has nothing to do with basketball. It's about the stupid looking baseball pants that are dragging the ground because they're 10 sizes too long.

Cleats over pants make it acuatlly more useful - your pant legs aren't in the way at any point. Stupid that "fashion" stuff like this is so important

Id have to say that wearing high socks isn't as comfortable as wear wearing baseball pants without the elastic at the bottom that makes it go over your cleats.

The bottom of the pants dragging along the ground look is akin to some stupid teenager running around all over town with his pants dropped down halfway between his waste and his knees. It just looks tacky and stupid.

Not only is it more aesthetically pleasing b/c it evokes memories of old-time baseball, it also makes the guys' legs look longer and butts look cuter. And let's be honest--that's really, really important.

It seems the pants in the photo You've displayed in this post might be OK; it’s just dudes that are getting too careless and covering a majority of their cleats that seem to be the problem here!

It's time to come to terms with new fashion. This is a good look for baseball. I guess you want players to still wear the stirrups over socks.

As a matter of fact I do want the players to go back to wearing the stirrups over the socks!!! I can remember when baseball players looked like they were wearing major league uniforms and not pants that belonged to somebody a foot taller than them. The oversized pants look stupid and tacky.

I like the long, hemmed bottom look. It's better than the stirrups I wore in the '70 in Little League. Yikes! Polyester pants and tops with elastic waistbands. Yeah right!. I definitely prefer the long pants look better than any style that came before this style.
