LeBron James: Yoga Is A Friend Of Mine
I have never participated in yoga. Hmm, what else about yoga? Oh yeah, I was sort of bummed they cut the yoga scene out of Forgetting Sarah Marshall, because Kristen Wigg was the yoga instructor, and I like Kristen Wigg. Though, I can see why they cut it; it’s not particularly memorable.
And one more thing about yoga: LeBron James is apparently all about it. So much so that he’s doing it poolside at hotels on the road. So much so that when he lands awkwardly in a game, it’s ain’t no thang. Here, read on:
Two weeks ago, for example, he flipped backward over his neck chasing a loose ball in Phoenix. It looked like he might have hurt himself doing it, but in reality it was sort of like the Salamba Sarvangasana, or shoulder stand, he’d worked on a day before.
“It is something that really can help your balance,” James said. “I had some lower back problems a few years ago, and once I started to do the yoga, it has helped them go away for now. Of course, we can stretch, but stretching only goes so far.”
LBJ is certainly not the first NBA player or athlete to dip into yoga, but this article speaks to an overall philosophy change in his off-court routine: he’s taking better care of his body and eating better than ever before. The conclusion here is that it’s definitely helping his game go to a new level. But when I read about a guy starting to lift weights (seriously, LBJ has recently added weights into his routine, he’s never really lifted before), doing yoga and eating healthier and this leading to bigger and better things, I’m reminded of Matt Watson’s take on Stephen Jackson’s new routine.
And it sort of worries me a bit.
