Kerry Wood’s Old Locker Will Remain Open This Season
For Cubs fans, the Kerry Wood dismissal was a bit of a sad one this offseason. After finally crawling back from injury after injury after injury and assuming a premiere role in the Cubs bullpen as the team’s closer, Jim Hendry — who was pretty much besties with Wood — decided his price tag was going to be too much, so they decided to not pursue another contract with him. He later signed with the Indians.
But fear not, lovers of Wood, the Cubs have not completely let go of him. In fact, the team has decided to leave his locker open this season. (Via E at NBC.) Nobody was assigned to take it over. It will just sit there, unmoved, unused, as a remembrance of your friend and mine, Kerry Wood. A nice — albeit somewhat strange — gesture.
Will Cubs players adorn it with flowers? Pay their respects when they walk by it? Decide it might be a good place to store some extra shampoo? Who knows.
I just hope no one uses it as an excuse for a Cubs playoff flop — or World Series victory — come September.
