Obama Destroys NASCAR On April Fool’s Day
You know what sucks? April Fool’s Day. Maybe back in like sixth grade, when the Internet only existed to the extent that I could ask creepshows in AOL chat rooms for their a/s/l, it was funny. The jokes among friends took place face-to-face, and you really had to sell it. It meant something.
On the Internet in 2009, all you have to do is dream up a semi-clever blog post, publish it early in the morning, and watch the half-hearted lulz roll in. It’s boring and a waste of time. And I’m saying this about the Internet. When Hasheem Thabeet plays the best April Fool’s prank of anyone in the sports blogosphere, you know how low we’ve gone.
I would say much the same about Car And Driver, but the notion of a million angry NASCAR fans furious at President Obama over a fake story pleases me too much:
Car and Driver pulled off the biggest April Fools’ Day joke of the day on its Web site, caranddriver.com. It posted a story headlined “Obama Orders Chevrolet and Dodge Out Of NASCAR - Car News”
Granted, right below the headline, you saw the words “HAPPY APRIL FOOLS’ DAY! THIS IS A JOKE. LIGHTEN UP, PEOPLE”. Still, it became one of the hottest items on Twitter during the noon hour and has sparked a lot of conversation about the auto industry’s involvement in NASCAR.
HOW DARE THAT SOCIALIST TERROR PERSON STEAL OUR NASCAR FROM US!!! WHAT IS THIS, A SMALL DICTATORIAL COUNTRY WITHOUT OUR HISTORICAL REVERENCE OF DEMOCRACY AND THE FREE MARKET?!?!? ANGGGGGGGER!!!!!!
Of course, the post was a joke, Obama has bigger fish to fry than NASCAR, and while the $250 million American auto companies spend on the sport is a considerable sum, it’s a drop in the hat compared the rest of the money going out the government’s doors these days. So, NASCAR fan, deep breaths. Save the rage for when we make you race Priuses.

i don't think pulling funding for Nascar would have been so inappropriate in any case, desperate times and all
