So The Spike Lee Kobe Documentary Looks Pretty Awesome
ESPN Films has a short and undistinguished history. Maybe aside from “Playmakers,” which was bad but was about football, so OK, whatever, I’ll watch, basically everything ESPN Films has ever done has been forgettable. Can you name something? I rest my case. (Ed. note: What about Through The Fire?)
But that’s OK. I don’t go to ESPN for fictionalized narratives about sports (except when Chris Mortensen is writing; zing!). I go to ESPN for actual, real-life sports news. Anything else is just a bonus. Still, I’m willing to set aside those reservations for the impending ESPN-produced Spike Lee documentary entitled Kobe Doin’ Work. It actually looks really good. A quick preview:
Yeah, so that looks cool, right? Spike Lee is a pretty forgiving documentarian, but this looks like one of those things that will either sway opinions on Kobe fully in one direction, or fully entrench them, based on one’s preconceived notions. Or maybe Kobe will just talk himself into a douchy hole. Either way, it will be compelling, at least half as compelling as when Leon Taylor started taking steroids, and Paul Tagliabue decided he’d had just about enough of that.
