Bill Simmons’s Doomed GM Quest Continues

By Eamonn Brennan

One of Bill Simmons’s longest-running gags, at least since he’s become ESPN-famous, is his nearly annual campaign to get himself a job as general manager of an NBA franchise. Last year, it was the Milwaukee Bucks. Spurred on by surprising support from Bucks fans, Simmons seemed to eventually take the campaign seriously, even though it would obviously never happen. This year? The Minnesota Timberwolves need a new GM, and Simmons thinks he’s just the man for the job.

Below are his most recent tweets from his Twitter account. To wit:

All grand ideas, and all good points. I’ll be honest: I am totally in favor of this happening.

It’s not necessarily because I think Simmons would be a good GM, because, you know, maybe he would, but I imagine actually doing the job is tougher than writing about the job. The real reason this should happen is because Simmons would finally get to test the many theories he stands behind, and would get to put them on the line in a real, live situation. There’s no hiding from that. What’s more, he’d be a stand-in for every fan who’s ever had someone say, oh, “What do you know? You’ve never been a GM.” He’d have the chance to vindicate not only himself but the millions of us who are positive, if given the opportunity, that we could do better.

Throw in the inevitable media circus and the columns/books/podcasts from Simmons’ front office, and Minnesota gets a chance to rebuild its franchise while doing something completely different. There’s really nothing to lose.

Of course, sports owners are a prideful lot, and no one in the T-Wolves front office is going to say, you know what? Bill’s right. We are irrelevant. Let’s just scrap the whole thing! So this idea will never happen. But it should. As insufferable as Simmons would be — and I like Simmons, but he does get occasionally insufferable — it should.
