As It Turns Out, Ron Artest’s Story About The Table Leg Through The Chest Really Happened

By Jon Bois

Last night, Ron Artest puffed his pipe, set a few rascally reporters on his knee and spun quite a yarn. The video can be seen on Ball Don’t Lie (via Talk Hoops); I’ll post a partial transcript below.

I remember one time, it was um…one of my friends, you know, he was playing basketball, they was winning the game, they were so competitive, they threw a, um, they broke the … a piece of leg from a table and they threw it and it went right through his heart and he died.

No way, right? That’s Ron Artest for you. Always recounting tales about friends being impaled by furniture. Well … as it turns out, he was telling more than a colorful anecdote. From the April 15, 1991 New York Times:

A 19-year-old basketball player from Queens was fatally stabbed with a broken-off table leg today after a fight broke out during a basketball tournament, the police said.

The story notes that the player was stabbed by a 16-year-old. And Artest would have been 12 years old the night he witnessed this.

So this is New York City. Frank Sinatra and the Pace salsa commercials failed to warn me.
