Chelsea-Barcelona Thriller Produces Greatest GIFs Since Zidane Headbutt
Yesterday, Chelsea and Barcelona played a truly tremendous Champions League semifinal match. It was one of those games that I can point to non-soccer people as to why they should be watching the sport, and yeah, I MEAN YOU, YOU IGNORANT AMERICAN. Soccer’s awesome. Anyway, Chelsea controlled most of the afternoon, scoring early on a perhaps-kinda-lucky Michael Essien rocket and then doing what Chelsea always does: defend well, counterattack and overpower the opposition. For much of the day, it worked.
As the game drew to a close, though, Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta fired a perfectly placed shot into the top corner of Chelsea’s goal. That sealed the semifinal win for Barcelona, as it was the only away goal scored, breaking the 1-1 aggregate tie.
Anyway, I feel like I’m explaining the rules of soccer and not just getting to the good stuff. The good stuff, in this instance, amount to a few very solid .gif files. See, because of three or four uncalled penalty opportunities, Chelsea felt they were robbed of the win. They have a point. The way they chose to express it after the game, however, was less justifiable. Also, it was really hilarious. For example, there’s this nice bit of crazy eyes from Chelsea striker Didier Drogba:

Rich. But the most noble work is being done on the following file, wherein Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack decided to confront the referee after the game. What ensued was nothing short of brilliant:

That, of course, only unleashed the interpretive hive mind of the Internet:

Top three: Tom and Jerry, Burning House, Smiley Faces. But to each his own.
(HT: Dave Warner and Maj for indirectly helping me compile these.)
