Jake Peavy To The White Sox? It’s Pending His Approval (UPDATE)
Well, this is an ironic twist. After all the nonsense that went on between the Cubs and Padres this offseason in an attempt to move Jake Peavy to the North Side, Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman is reporting the Padres have agreed to trade Jake Peavy to the White Sox.
Right now, it all hinges on whether Jake Peavy, who has a no-trade clause, will waive it and head to the South Side.
So will he? This morning the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Peavy may have some reservations about playing for Ozzie Guillen:
Within the clubhouse, though, Peavy referred to the situation as “something to think about” yet also restated his desire to stay in the National League. One of Peavy’s teammates said he believes Peavy respects the Sox’s aggressiveness in pushing for him but may have reservations about pitching for Ozzie Guillen, the White Sox’s volatile manager.
This would obviously be a great get for the Sox. Peavy’s been one of the premiere pitchers in the league the last few years, and he’s young at 27. (He turns 28 on May 31.) But you wonder who the Sox are going to give up here. The Padres aren’t going to just hand him over, one would think. If any of the Sox’s young position player prospects go — the ones with true promise and talent like a Gordon Beckham — it would almost be like taking a step forward to take two steps back. We’ll know in due time who the Sox gave up if Peavy agrees. Maybe Clayton Richard or Aaron Poreda? That would make sense, as they’d be giving up some younger, promising pitching for Peavy.
And remember, this isn’t going to solve their offensive woes either.
UPDATE: A few places, including FanHouse, are reporting Poreda is in the deal, and Richard will likely be involved. FanHouse also reports the Padres will get one or two other players from the Sox.
UPDATE TWO: The San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting a deal is not imminent, and though Peavy has a lot of respect for the Sox, prefers to stay in the NL.
