News Flash: Ozzie Still Hates Wrigley Field
Drunk people can’t control themselves in Chicago. The Cubs-Sox series has gone from weekend night games, to weekend day games, to this year’s bout: smack dab in the middle of the next week at Wrigley. (Though, not all is lost. The following weekend at the Cell, the Cubs and Sox will match up in a three-game series of afternoon games. Does this mean they trust the rowdiness down at the South Side more?)
Anyway, since the series is rapidly approaching, it’s time for Ozzie Guillen to talk about his Wrigley hatred once again:
”You know I hate to go to Wrigley, but I have to,” White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said Thursday of the crosstown series, which starts Tuesday night in a ballpark he has called rat-infested. ”And now we are going to play a night game?
”I have (three) reasons to like the Cubs: I like the manager (Lou Piniella) - I love the manager. I have a bunch of respect for the general manager (Jim Hendry), and I have a bunch of friends out there. I don’t have anything against them. They are a great organization.
”There’s one thing in Chicago: Everyone knows how much I hate Wrigley Field and they have to respect that.”
What Guillen says here is an important distinction. He doesn’t hate the Cubs per se; he hates the old, outdated, crowded and cramped (but charming and full of character!) facility. He’s not alone in this: Carlos Zambrano has been on record as saying as much. Wrigley was built a long time ago; when you experience modern amenities at other ballparks, it’s easy to see what Wrigley lacks, as far as luxuries for the teams are concerned.
But Wrigley is Wrigley. It’s not going to be drastically changing any time soon.
