Devin Hester Would Like You To Stop Picking On Jay Cutler
In one corner, there is Jay Cutler, gifted quarterback, maker of men, savior of the Chicago Bears football franchise. In the other, there is Jay Cutler, he of poor attitude, selfishness and immaturity. Devin Hester wants you to know that latter Jay Cutler does not exist. And shame on you for even thinking that a guy that asked out of Denver in a very public he-said, she-said battle would be immature.
Devin Hester wants you to know this:
“If you haven’t been around a person like Cutler, how could you say something like that?” Hester said before appearing in a photo shoot Monday evening at Soldier Field for an Under Armour commercial.
In recent weeks, Super Bowl-winning coaches Tony Dungy and Mike Ditka have been among those who have expressed reservations about Cutler’s maturity level.
“Can’t judge a book by its cover,” Hester said. “If you haven’t sat down and talked to him, how could you say something like that? He’s calm in the huddle. He makes us laugh and he jokes around before the ball is snapped. That’s the kind of quarterback who is relaxed and says, ‘Let’s play ball.’ “
I would like to believe Hester is right. In fact, I’m going to give Cutler the benefit of the doubt in Chicago, until he gives us reason to believe otherwise. The Denver stuff is in the past, and that’s where it should remain.
But Hester is speaking about OTAs. He hasn’t seen Cutler in the heat of the battle in a real game, and he hasn’t seen Cutler when he’s had a rough fourth quarter in a losing effort.
He’s seen him toss some passes and act happy. Until the season really starts, Hester’s knowledge of Cutler is only marginally better than the guys that are tearing him down.
After the jump, our Sarah Spain interviews Hester about similar topics at this Under Armour commerical shoot.
