Father Rubio Says Ricky May Stay In Spain
You are the Minnesota Timberwolves. You are David Kahn, new president of basketball operations. You had three picks in the first round last night. How exciting! Time to instill some confidence in the fanbase by … … …. drafting three point guards in the first round, including back-to-back ones with the No. 5 (Ricky Rubio) and No. 6 (Johnny Flynn) pick. Huh?
The last of those, the No. 18 pick, Ty Lawson, was traded to Denver. But they seem pretty serious about pairing Rubio and Flynn together, which seems rather silly. Except this might not quite work out so hot for them. Rubio’s dad told a Spanish Web site this, via the New York Times:
Rubio’s father, Esteve, cast serious doubt about Rubio’s future with the Timberwolves, telling the Spanish Web site Marca.com, “Right now, Ricky is likely staying in Europe one or two years.” He added, “We have to talk to the people in Minnesota and see what happens” and “we could be in Minnesota or somewhere else.”
Whoopsies! This is the classic case of “damn it, we got drafted by a team we don’t like, and we’re going to let it be known, and hopefully something is done about it.” Right now, the Knicks are openly pining for Rubio, but Minnesota is not taking too kindly to their advances.
Rubio makes sense in New York, because Mike D’Antoni is looking for that exciting point guard to run his seven-second-or-less offense.
Mr. Kahn, just make the trade. Try and get some value for Rubio. Get at least a first-round draft pick and some bodies out of it. Holding onto Rubio’s rights for a few years, when he’s clearly NBA-ready now, seems like a waste.
Also, he’s just too cute not to bring to the NBA next year. Look at those eyes!
