Frank Thomas: Almost Retired
Frank Thomas may not be playing baseball this season for any team in Major League Baseball, but that does not mean he’s retired. Don’t be silly. In fact, if called upon, he’s in game shape, and can definitely throw a football over them mountains.
”That percent right now [that I'll play again] is probably about 5 percent, since we’re so deep into the season now,” Thomas, who was released by Oakland after last season, told WMVP-AM (1000). ”But I’m still in shape, ready to go, if anything happens.
”But I’m getting close to announcing my retirement because I just turned 41. I just want to make sure that it’s the move I really want to make.”
OK, so he’s actually pretty close to officially calling it quits. I’ve gushed about Frank Thomas here before, and I will applaud the man when he gracefully bows out. I hope the Sox do the same.
But, let’s have some fun with this. WHAT IF … the Sox brought Frank Thomas back for the second half of the season. AND WHAT IF … Frank Thomas went on an unbelievable tear and took over as DH. AND WHAT IF … this catapulted the Sox into the playoffs. AND WHAT IF … the Sox went to the World Series and beat the Cubs in Game 7, and then the apocalypse came, but Sox fans wouldn’t care because we won a World Series and there was just mass insane bedlam and looting and OHMYGOD that guy just got his leg sawed off … OK, I’ll stop there.
