Ozzie Guillen Calls Cubs Fans Stupid
In response to why attendance spiked over the weekend at the Cell, Ozzie Guillen said this:
“Because our fans are not stupid like Cubs fans,” Guillen said. “They know we’re [expletive].”
Guillen said Cubs fans will watch any game at Wrigley Field because “Wrigley Field is just a bar.”
There is a sliver of truth to this stereotype. Wrigley’s attendance is usually greater because some — not all – attendees see it as an event, and it certainly helps that their fanbase and popularity is more far-reaching than that of the South Side. If you’re going to make an argument for Wrigley’s attendance vs. The Cell’s, the latter is probably more convincing. More popularity equals more attendance. Simple as that. But I am here to say this: There are stupid fans on both sides of town.
I attended the Cubs-Sox games on Saturday and Sunday. I saw several fights. I saw a dude spit in another dude’s face. I saw a Cubs fan rip off part of a Sox fan’s pretzel and eat it. I saw a Cubs fan wearing a racially insensitive shirt. I saw Sox fans holding up derogatory signs about Cubs fans’ sexuality. I saw a Cubs fan flicking off a camera taking a group shot of Sox fans. I saw a Cubs fan struggling to keep balance. I saw a Sox fan struggling to keep balance. I saw a lot of stupid drunk people doing stupid drunk things. I heard a lot of stupid sober people yelling stupid sober things.
OK, fine. Cubs fans are stupid.
