Tiger Woods To Miss Cut At British Open? (UPDATE)
It is looking very much like it. (Yeah, he missed it.) At one point in his round of 74 today, Tiger lost seven strokes on six holes, and despite back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17, finished today at +5. This isn’t a catastrophically high score, but the cut sits at +4 right now.
Some history: if that cut score holds up, it will be the second time he’s missed a cut at a major since turning pro — his other missed cut came in 2006.
Three things:
1) This is rare, but it’s going to happen. Golf is an incredibly humbling sport. Woods’ two double bogeys on the back nine are proof of that. You can be the greatest golfer in the world, and it can still knock you on your ass here and there. That’s just how it works.
2) If you’re ABC execs, you’re not too happy right now. Tiger Woods is golf. I’m not saying golf still isn’t entertaining to watch otherwise (it’s particularly glorious in HD), but if Tiger Woods isn’t in the hunt (and even if he’s not really in the hunt, as long as he’s playing on Sunday, they’ll cut back to his shots, which is really kind of silly) less people will be watching. I know this is a simple, cliched argument, but it’s also true.
3) Things cold be worse. He could be wearing this hat.
