In Which Marcus Jordan’s Feet Become Blogworthy

By Ryan Corazza

So, Marcus Jordan will be playing basketball this season as a freshman for the University of Central Florida. It’s an adidas school. UH OH. But Marcus has said he’s cool with rocking adidas gear, just as long as he can still wear his dad’s shoes on his feet.

If this seems like a reasonable compromise to you — it’s um, rare, a player’s father has the most iconic basketball shoes, you know — I would agree.

But, sometimes the world doesn’t quite run on logic. It runs on money and previously existing contracts. As such, adidas isn’t quite cool with Jordan wearing his dad’s shoes, reports Darren Rovell.

Soon after the comments were made, UCF athletic director Keith Tribble told AOL’s Fanhouse that the freshman could make the decision for himself since there had been a previous precedent set with a UCF football player who wore a different brand of shoe due to the fit.

But adidas spokesperson Andrea Corso told CNBC that no compromise had been reached with the school.

“We are in negotiations for a future relationship regarding the broader UCF athletic program,” Corso said. “What I can say is that these relationships are based upon agreed deliverables for both parties.”

Rovell is saying this isn’t a Nike vs. adidas thing, it’s about a breach of contract. Jordan wearing his dad’s shoes would be in violation of UFC’s contract with adidas. He’s already a big draw for the program; if he’s wearing non-contract shoes as a high-profile figure that’s more exposure for the Jordan brand, and less for adidas, the brand that has an agreement with the school. I see where adidas is coming from here.

If Jordan is forced to wear adidas? He should totally rock sambas in protest.
