Jordan Wears Jordans; Adidas Drops UCF

By Ryan Corazza

So, remember when Marcus Jordan said he’d be wearing his daddy’s shoes when the season started, and not adidas, even though UCF has a contract with adidas?

I understood where he was coming from, because it’s just a pair of shoes, and it’s not every day — or ever, really — that your dad has his own brand of basketball shoes. But hey, when there is a written contract that involves money and exclusivity and you break that, well, you’re going to get your comeuppance.

Marcus decided to wear Jordans last night in UCF exhibition opener. And now adidas has dropped UCF:

Marcus Jordan stuck to his guns and wore his father’s iconic Nike Air Jordans, a decision that has cost the University of Central Florida its six-year, $3 million exclusive contract with adidas.

Adidas spokeswoman Andrea Corso said in an e-mail to the Orlando Sentinel, “The University of Central Florida has chosen not to deliver on their contractual commitment to adidas. As a result we have chosen not to continue our relationship with them moving forward.”

In Marcus’ defense, regional adidas peeps reached an agreement with the school that said he could wear the shoes. It wasn’t until higher-level adidas execs got involved that there was objection from adidas to him wearing his dad’s kicks. And he wore white Jordans that didn’t have any prominent jumpman logos on them. They blended in with his teammates’ white adidas ones. It’s not like he was trying to draw attention to himself.

It still remains to be seen whether the school will have to pay back adidas for any gear they’ve received.

Oh, and here’s an easy solution for UCF if they’re looking for a new sponsor now: sign with Jordan brand/Nike.
