Philly’s Banged Up Secondary = Cutler’s Chance To Break Free?
The Eagles come flying into town this weekend to take on the Bears at Solider Field. They will be without Brian Westbrook, because he is eternally concussed.
But the Eagles’ secondary is also a bit beat up as well, and that might be just what Jay Cutler and his receivers need to get back on track — if they were ever on a track to begin with — after Cutler’s five-interception fest last Thursday night against the 49ers.
Starting cornerback Sheldon Brown has a hamstring injury he suffered last week against the Chargers. He might be out Sunday. Backup Joselio Hanson is out another couple weeks after a suspension for violating the league’s drug policy. Another Philly cornerback, Ellis Hobbs, has a neck injury, and he’s done for the year. In their places, the Eagles have promoted Jack Ikegwuonu from the practice squad. They also signed free agent Ramzee Robinson, who the Lions of all teams cut back in September.
Do you see how all this adds up to some likely advantageous matchups for Cutler and his receivers come Sunday, the offensive line notwithstanding?
If the Bears can feast in the passing game, and the defense can give a similar effort to what they brought in San Fransisco, the Bears might be able to break out of this slump.
But as has been the case the last few weeks with these Bears, don’t expect much.
