Why Derrick Rose Is Shooting More This Season
It’s no secret Derrick Rose has struggled out the gate this season. And as Not Qualifed to Comment points out, part of it has to do with the fact he’s taking more jump shots this year.
His numbers from last year:
- Percentage of shots taken close to basket: 51.4 percent, 56.3 percent made
- Percentage of shots taken away from basket: 48.6 percent, 39.3 percent made
His numbers from this year:
- Percentage of shots taken close to basket: 32 percent, 53.7 percent made
- Percentage of shots taken away from basket: 68 percent, 41.2 percent made
As you can see from their number crunching, Rose is taking a whopping 20 percent more shots from the outside this year, and while he’s hitting them at a bit of a higher rate — though 41.2 percent isn’t exactly lights out — it hasn’t done much to aid him in the scoring department.
Obviously, Rose’s ankle is a main catalyst here. He’s been playing with less explosion and aggressiveness all season, and Rose has mentioned his ankle still isn’t all the way there yet. But I’ll take it a step further and say Rose might also be trying out the jump shot more because he worked on it a lot this offseason, and perhaps has fallen back on it due to a combination of wanting to try it out more, and his ankle limiting what he can do on driving to the hoop.
But maybe we’re already starting to see this flip. He recently vowed to be more aggressive, and Rose scored 20 points against the Lakers on Friday and 28 against the Nuggets on Saturday. He had only hit the 20-point mark once so far this season before the weekend. In the Lakers game, he took more shots around the rim than from the outside. And against the Nuggets, he shot a season-high seven free throws, which may be indicating he’s being more aggressive and not settling for an outside shot. (Though he did take 13 jumpers, as opposed to seven layups in that contest.)
In any event, if Rose continues this mini-aggressive streak and if his ankle is almost back to normal, I wouldn’t expect him to continue to take 68 percent of his shots from the outside this season. He’s too good around the rim to keep doing that.
