Have The Sox Found Their Leadoff Man In Coco Crisp?

By Ryan Corazza

What do you do when you can’t afford Chone Figgins or Johnny Damon? You go to the bargain bin. And inside it you find Coco Crisp.

It doesn’t look like they’re super close to a deal, but some details from the Trib:

The White Sox have expressed interest in free agent and longtime nemesis Coco Crisp, according to his agent.

“I have talked to (general manager) Kenny Williams on a preliminary basis,” Steve Compte said Tuesday. “We’re going to be a little patient. We haven’t talked dollars. We’re trying to identify the teams where there’s definitely a fit, and I’m sure they want to explore other options.”

Crisp just turned 30 earlier this month, which means he’s got some years left in him. But the reality of the situation is he’s only a .331 career OBP guy. That’s nothing special if you’re expecting him to lead off for you every game. Heck, Scott Podsednik has a career OBP of .340, though last year’s .353 mark was Pods’ best mark since the magical 2005 season when he OBP’ed .351. Likely a bit of an aberration that has his OBP up a little higher.

Power-wise they bring about the same to the plate, which is very little. Crisp’s defense is better than Scotty’s, and that’s something the Sox are desperately lacking.

This is what happens when you take on Alex Rois’ albatross of a contract. You’re left choosing between Coco Crisp and Scott Podsednik. Ugh.
