Byron Russell vs. Michael Jordan: Off … For Now

By Ryan Corazza

So, the Daily Herald of Provo, UT is reporting today that Michael Jordan was reportedly spotted at Mimi’s Cafe in Orem, UT. Orem, UT is where the Utah Flash’s stadium is located — the spot where Byron Russell and MJ are supposed to engage in a one-on-one battle this evening.

Sound crazy after Jordan didn’t seem to have a ton of interest in this? Agreed. And that’s for a reason. Because Arash Markazi of Sports Illustrated just talked to Byron Russell, and Byron Russell said it’s not going down.

Said Russell:

“Hes not going for that and I’m not either; looking for a bigger venue.”

And where would this bigger venue be? Russell wants to hit up Vegas. He told Markazi in a previous interview back in November that he proposed a pay-per-view matchup in Las Vegas in late June or July to Jordan. And even though their matchup would involve charities, Jordan would see millions from sponsors and the like, according to Russell.

“If he looked at this, I guarantee you he wouldn’t turn this down,” said Russell, who retired in 2006. “Let’s just say it’s what he asked for and more. It’s going to be like a fight night but bigger. Can you imagine Vegas if this happened? Michael Jordan coming out of retirement to play one more time against Bryon Russell in a one-one-one, winner-take-all game — it would be huge.”

I suppose it would be huge. Maybe. But would Jordan really stoop to this level? He doesn’t need the cash. He doesn’t need the attention. He doesn’t need the potential damage to his rep if he steps to Russell and loses. He has nothing to win, really, and a lot to lose. It makes little sense for him to engage in some silly little battle with Byron Russell of all people, a battle that seems 100 percent orchestrated by Russell, because he continues to talk about it with no word from Jordan.

So is all of Russell’s talk ever going to see the light of day? I’d be surprised if it does. For as competitve as Jordan is, there are just some battles not worth fighting.
