People Are Watching The Blackhawks

By Ryan Corazza

From the Tribune:

Comcast SportsNet delivered its highest Hawks regular-season game ratings ever Wednesday night. The station received a 3.03 household rating from Nielson Media Research for the Hawks’ exciting 2-1 overtime victory over the Rangers …

The Hawks on Comcast SportsNet are currently averaging a 1.81 household rating, a year-to-date increase of 78 percent compared to last season through 19 telecasts.

Three things I want to point out here.

1) Winning helps. A lot. This team is doing that. They’re proving last year was no fluke. No flash in the pan.

2) One of the most interesting things about the Hawks’ popularity this season (and subsequent TV ratings) is how much of a generational thing it is. My dad watches the Hawks all the time now. The Hawks, were rarely, if ever, on when I was growing up. Same goes for some of my friends’ dads and uncles: it seems a lot of Hawks fans of the baby-boomer generation are re-discovering their love for the franchise, one they grew up following and fell out of touch with during the lean Bill Wirtz years, when home games weren’t televised.

3) In a year where the Bears and Bulls are pretty much worthless, Chicago sports fans can turn to the Hawks. The more people keep reading and seeing about the Hawks, the more they’re going to say: “Hey, maybe I should watch this team, huh?”

Count me among them. After the Bulls fell apart, I switched over to the Hawks last night. Pretty soon, I’ll likely be watching Hawks games, and making the Bulls my second option.
