The Last Days Of Vinny Del Negro

By Ryan Corazza

For a few weeks now, we’ve heard the NBA’s grim reaper has been making his way to Vinny Del Negro’s front door. He almost came for Del Negro earlier in the month around the 11-14. But he instead decided to circle the block, and speed up his gait after the Bulls’ epic 35-point collapse to the Kings one week ago today.

And now, according to ESPN’s the Magazine’s Chris Broussard, he’s already at Vinny’s doorstep; he just hasn’t rang the doorbell yet.

The decision to fire head coach Vinny Del Negro has already been made, according to sources with knowledge of the Chicago Bulls’ thinking. The fact that the Bulls’ front office has not been able to settle on a replacement is the main thing keeping the embattled Del Negro employed, the sources said …

A strong run by the Bulls, who beat New Orleans Saturday night after the return of Tyrus Thomas from a broken arm, could delay Del Negro’s eventual firing, but there is practically no chance he would coach the team beyond this season.

The inevitable has now become more inevitable.

Broussard writes the Bulls have contacted Doug Collins, but he’s not interested in coaching the team. Which is a good thing. Because for as much as I like Collins, his brand of basketball is of a slower pace, not something this team, with Derrick Rose at the point, should start playing any time soon.

Looks like the Bulls don’t really want to go the assistant coach — Bernie Bickerstaff, Pete Myers — route, so Lawrence Frank, whom they’ve been hot after, might be the lead get here.

I love Lawrence Frank because of his Indiana ties: He was a manager for Bob Knight, and worked his way to to a head coaching spot with the Nets from there. Pretty impressive.

But I’m not sure if he’s The Answer.
