This Matthew Forte Gentleman Appears to Have Some Talent

There’s been much hubbub made of the Bears first-round 2008 draft day decisions. They not only passed on Rashard Mendenhall — a local Illinois product apparently afflicted with fumbilitis — but they didn’t even deign to take a running back in the first round, opting for Chris Williams, a tackle out of Vandy.
Perhaps because they saw something out of Matt Forte (who actually has an accent on his “e”, which I refuse to acknowledge). Or perhaps because they were sick of rookie running backs stinking up the joint in their debuts. Or maybe they still had a Cedric Benson hangover. Whatever. The pick was more than justified Sunday night when the Bears rookie shred-jobbed the Colts to the tune of 141 total yards, including a speed-power-combo styled 50-yard scamper to the end zone.
Naturally, Forte won the prestigious Horse Trailer Player of the Week, the hearts of the Chicago faithful, and lots of little hot sticky notes in fantasy leagues across the nation. Oh, and an interview with the always charming Andrea Kramer after the game.
Kramer, always one to turn a sideline interview into total awkwardness, made sure to mention the fact that Walter Payton was the last rookie to start for the Bears … and he had ZERO yards on only EIGHT carries.
Which means that Forte’s like Jesus. No wait, he thanked Jesus, so that’s impossible. But probably close enough for Bears fans.
