Chicago Roundup: Rich Hill Trade Talk, Uribe Signs With Giants, Illini Fall To Gophers, Plus More!

By Ryan Corazza

The Cubs and Orioles just can’t quit each other. Looks like the Orioles might want them some Rich Hill. And who would the Cubs get in return? Some guy named “Player To Be Named Later.” I hear his VORP is off the charts. {Baltimore Sun.}

Former Sox free-swinger Juan Uribe has found a home. He signed a minor-league deal with the San Fransisco Hippies at Haight-Ashbury Giants. {Chicago Tribune.}

Do you remember Corie Blount? Of course you do. The Bulls drafted him back in the 90s, when grunge music was really cool. Well, he’s just been indicted on charges of selling and possessing marijuana. Last month, he got arrested for possession of 29 pounds of marijuana. I’m no professor, but that sounds like a lot of weed. {CBS Sports.}

Bruce Weber and his Merry Gentlemen have beaten the Golden Gophers of Minnesota 20 straight times. This streak dates back to 1999. (Beware of Y2K!) The Illini couldn’t make it 21, however, as they fell last evening up at the barn 59-36. Illinois fans coped by watching a DVD of the 2004-05 season. {Daily Illini.}

After his injury, Luol Deng is playing quite well. So a newspaper reporter asked him about it and he gave some quotes. Then he put it all together in a thing we in the business like to call an “article.” {Chicago Sun-Times.}

Chicago Roundup: Bulls Cut Powell; Bears Sign Holt; Hawks Lock Up Coach Joel Quenneville

By Ryan Corazza

Farewell, Sweet Roger

The Bulls waived former Illini player Roger Powell. In Champaign, Bruce Weber weeps. Then he wipes his tears and continues recruiting eighth graders. The Bulls also waived Michael Ruffin, but plan on re-signing him. Yeah, you read that right.  {Chicago Tribune.}

Hello, Sweet Terrence

Because most of the Bears’ secondary is in a body bag, they’ve picked up safety Terrence Holt. He comes with the “veteran” tag. With the bye this week, the defense will have time to heal up a bit before they take on the Lions the following week. {Chicago Sun-Times.}

Hawks Lock Up Quenneville

It’s official: the Hawks have inked Joel Quenneville to a three-year deal. And they thwacked the Oilers last night, 3-0. All hail King Joel. {Daily Herald.}

Bulls Win; Hughes Hurt

Up in Minnesota last night, the Bulls snipped the Timberwolves 85-75. Despite dropping 21 points (all on great shot selection choices, no doubt) Larry Hughes left the game with a dislocated right shoulder. {Blog-A-Bull.}
