Have you ever found yourself watching collegiate or professional basketball on your television, and wished the last 30 seconds weren’t muddied up with timeouts, free throws and commercials?
Do you long for the days of Bob Knight, a man who had little need for a timeout to calm down his team or draw up play after play?
Well then this video of a recent game between River Dell and Tenalfy Varsity in New Jersey (via Hot Clicks) should do the trick:
Marcus Jordan transferred to Whitney Young two years ago from Loyola, in part to gain a bit more exposure. Well, I’d say a state title might have helped his case a little. Saturday, his Dolphins beat Waukegen — a team who, if you remember, features this dude — 69-66 to win the 4A title.
As Marcus Jordan and his teammates celebrated on the court after the final buzzer, Michael Jordan stood quietly, clapping his hands with tears in his eyes.
“Crying?” the NBA great said in response to a reporter’s question. “I’m not crying. Not for me, anyway.
Marcus still hasn’t picked a school yet — I blogged about some of his struggles in that department a few months back — but, he has a considerable amount more talent than his older brother Jeff. And Jeff actually saw some decent minutes this year for the Illini as he went from preferred walk-on to a scholarship this year, so you’d think Marcus would be able to nab an offer somewhere.
Though, Rivals only has an offer from Miami on the table at the moment. Maybe Jeff and Marcus can go play together in Europe in a few years. Or maybe they can just live off daddy’s name after their college days are done.
With the usability of the Internet and YouTube, ridiculous high school buzzer beaters are being seen by a much larger audience now. They’re likely not happening at a higher rate; it’s just that we’re seeing them all now, so we tend to think they happen all the time.
Because of that, they’ve almost lost their luster. But, this half-courter to win the 4A Waukegan Sectional title by Waukegan’s Jereme Richmond — an Illinois recruit — on Friday night was flat out ridiculous.
The scene: Waukegan trailed Warren by a point after Warren guard Brandon Paul — another Illinois recruit — hit three free throws. Richmond, who was battling a 103-degree fever, then took the inbounds pass and did this:
The craziest part about this shot is there is no sense of urgency on Richmond’s behalf; he lines up for that thing like a regular jumper. Wild. Paul’s quote seems to confirm that:
Warren guard Brandon Paul, with tears streaming down his face, described it best:
“I looked at his face when he got the ball and I got scared. He had no expression on his face. It was like he knew he was going to make it before he even shot it.”
I fear for what this kid is going to do once he hits the Big Ten.
You don’t really have to do much these days in order to get famous on the Internet. You can spend three months in a Mexico City airport, or, more simply, heave a basketball 82 feet across the court and into the net for the game winner in a high school basketball game. Got that? Yeah, pretty simple.
Yes, it is more or less incredible. But surely I’m not the only person wondering why this person was still taping the game, right? I mean, it’s awesome that it got captured, but why bother. The game was over. Or maybe this is just why I’ve never had anything good on YouTube.
