2009 MLB Draft - Updates on Cubs Picks

By Harry Pavlidis

One pick has already declined the Cubs offer, but at least 19 have already signed a contract. The other 30 are pending or unknown, as of this writing.

Here’s an update on 26 of the Cubs’ 50 picks, including all of the top 15 and 18 and of the top 20.

1 Brett Jackson, CF
Signed

The Chicago Cubs have agreed to terms with outfielder Brett Jackson, the club’s first-round selection (31st overall) in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, pending a physical.

I see a guy with pretty good upside, Wilken said. He’s got pretty good power in his bat, a very live bat, but he’s got to do some things. He has to soften his approach, but if he can do that the contact can be more consistent. He’s a true center fielder with average plus arm. He’s got a chance to be a complete player.

2 DJ LeMahieu, IF
Unsigned
DJ is playing in the College World Series, and has been one of the hitting stars for the Tigers.

3 Austin Kirk, LHP
Unsigned

“They are very serious about signing me,” Kirk said. “They tell me they want me out there as soon as I can get there. I’m also anxious to get going, but we have a lot of stuff to figure out first.” Kirk, who has signed to play at the University of Oklahoma, elected not to sign with an agent or adviser, should he opt for college. “My dad (Mark) is handling the negotiations,” Kirk said. “Where they drafted me (third round) makes me think more seriously in signing professionally. But I’m really unsure of any timeline at this point. I’m prepared either to wait or go tomorrow.” Kirk declined to discuss any dollar amount, but third-round signing bonuses are generally in the six-figure range, according to Cubs scout Brandon Mozley, who is handling the negotiations. “

4 Chris Rusin, LHP
Unsigned

“They’ll give me a call and then I’ll have a couple of days to get things together and then I’ll head down to Arizona,” he said. “Then, there’s a short spring training type of deal for about 10 days and then we’ll split off wherever we’re assigned.”

5 Wes Darvill, SS
Signed - Canadian National Junior Team

The Cubs will allow Darvill to tour with the Team Canada National Junior Team when it plays Team USA in Cary, N.C. and then heads to Havana, Cuba.

6 Brooks Raley, LHP
Unsigned - Team USA Trials

Wilken: I was really impressed by his feel for pitching. I think he’s got a good feel for it. He’s very athletic, gets off the mound well and fields his position. We’re going to watch him this summer and stay on him tight. Hopefully we get an opportunity some time this summer to sign him.”

7 Blair Springfield, SS
Unsigned

“Illinois State has probably lost the top baseball recruit in its incoming class. Decatur MacArthur High School standout Blair Springfield is likely turning pro after being taken in the seventh round of the first-year player draft by the Chicago Cubs.”

8 Robert Whitenack, RHP
Signed - Boise Hawks

9 Richard Jones, C
Unsigned

Jordan still is awaiting a decision from junior catcher Richard Jones, who was a ninth-round pick of the Cubs. Jones is playing for the Thomasville (N.C.) team in the Coastal Plains League. And Jordan said senior outfielder Sonny Meade, who was not drafted, is pursuing a free-agent deal.

10 Charles Thomas, 3B
Signed - AZL Cubs

“In addition to being a powerful hitter, Thomas also has a fastball that has been clocked as high as 94 mph. The Cubs drafted Thomas as a third baseman, but when the team worked him out before the draft, he pitched in addition to spending time at first base.

As long as I’m at the pro level, said Thomas. Whatever gets me there, that’s cool. I just want to let it happen. I know I’ll make it one day. “

12 Runey Davis, OF
Signed

Mississippi State baseball signee Runey Davis has signed with the Chicago Cubs and won’t be coming to State, coach John Cohen confirmed today.

Davis, maybe the most-touted recruit in the class, would step right into an outfield job if he opts to play college baseball. But a 12th-round picking out of juco–he was an 11th rounder out of high school–might be too much to turn down now. We’ll have to wait and see on Runey,

13 Chad Taylor, SS

Taylor, drafted in the 13th round by the Cubs, said he couldn’t come to an agreement with the organization. “It had to pay me enough to get me out of college,” he said. “I think it’s in my best interest to go to college.”
