Malcolm Herron Is The Best Player You Know Nothing About

By Dan Poneman

Malcolm Herron ranks as one of the top 20 seniors in the state of Illinois, but chances are you know nothing about him. The 6′3 shooting guard from Downers Grove South has a complete game, a stellar skill set, great athleticism, and a high basketball IQ, but chances are you haven’t seen him play. With the exception of two tournaments with Meanstreets this summer, the kid had never even played big time AAU ball.

I put him at #19 in the rankings after I watched him a number of times at the NY2LA Next Level Invitational in Milwaukee, Wisconsin this July. He played throughout that tournament like a top 10 player, but because it was just one tournament, I was hesitant to move him that high. If he continues his strong summer play into the school season he could be poised to become a serious break out player on the national scene. From what I’ve seen of him, he certainly has the talent to do so.

“I started playing with Meanstreets in July and played with them at the Nike Peach Jam and the NY2LA tournament,” explained Herron. “I enjoyed playing with them a lot. It was great playing with DJ Cooper and them, and I only wish I would’ve played with them from the beginning. I learned a lot from (Meanstreets Coach Tai Streets). He taught me a lot such as being consistent and making sure I’m playing hard all the time. He is one of the best coaches I have ever had.”

Herron has struggled in the past with academic issues, but he is working hard to qualify so that he can play division one basketball next year. Eastern Illinois, Wisconsin- Milwaukee, Wisconsin- Green Bay, Loyola, and Illiois State have all expressed interest in Herron and you can expect that list to grow if he is becomes a qualifier.

“I’ve got around a 2.4 GPA and a 19 ACT so I’m really close,” he stated. “I have to improved a little but I should be qualified by the end of this semester. A few schools said they would offer if I qualified. Illinois State, Eastern Illinois and Wisconsin- Milwaukee have shown the most interest.”
